Writing The Report

Lesson Summary

Once students have completed the research and note taking on their chosen topic, they are ready to write their report.  The following lesson provides students with suggestions and checklists to keep in mind during the writing process.

4.  Use organizational strategies (e.g. brainstorming, lists, webs and Venn diagrams) to plan writing.
5.  Organize writing by providing a simple introduction, body and a clear sense of closure.
6.  Use a wide range of simple, compound and complex sentences.
7.  Create paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting sentences that are  marked by indentation and are linked by transitional words and phrases.
9.  Use available technology to compose text.
12.  Rearrange words, sentences and paragraphs to clarify meaning.
13.  Use resources and reference materials, including dictionaries, to select more effective vocabulary.

Required Materials & Equipment
  • One each of three handouts for each student:  "Introduction", "Body & Conclusion", and "Title Page"
Instructional Procedure
  1. Teacher provides each student with a copy of each handout.
  2. Teacher reads aloud the information in the handouts as the students follow along.
Assessment

Teacher will informally assess students by verbally asking random students various questions about items discussed in the handout.
